LOFT INSULATION WALES

Can I get free Loft Insulation Wales?

Under The Great British Insulation Scheme, there are 2 factors that decide whether you qualify for free insulation

  • Do you qualify
  • Does your property qualify

You can find out if you qualify here ( the rules are the same as Free Cavity wall Insulation)

To find out if your home qualifies is a little trickier. It depends on the size of the property – the smaller, the better and the EPC rating – the lower the better.

In fact, the EPC will have to be an F or a G to make it viable.

However, if you were having cavity wall insulation and loft insulation, then both would be free.

Grants are not normally available if there is more than 100mm (4 inches) of existing Loft Insulation.

We would, of course, be pleased to give a quote to those who do not qualify for a grant on either scheme.

Loft Insulation FAQ: Benefits, Costs & Installation Guide

Loft insulation is a layer of material installed in your roof space to reduce heat loss through the ceiling. It keeps your home warmer in winter, cooler in summer, and helps you save money on your energy bills.

We don’t use the “itchy stuff” any more.

We install a “quilt” of insulation (much of which is recycled materials, including wool), which the manufacturers state “you could comfortably sleep on”.

There are two main methods:

  1. Cold loft insulation
    • Laid between and over the joists on the loft floor.
    • Ideal if the loft is not used for living space.
    • The rolls of insulation are in “polythene bags” which are taken into the loft, where the insulation is removed from the bags.
    • The first layer of insulation is laid between the joists, and a second layer is laid at right angles to the first layer, that is, across the joists.
  2. Warm loft insulation
    • Installed under roof tiles or rafters.
    • Perfect for loft conversions or home offices.

Installation time: Typically 2–4 hours, depending on loft size.

Sheep’s wool: Natural, sustainable, and moisture-resistant.

Rigid foam boards: Suitable for sloped roofs and converted lofts.

Proper airflow is essential to prevent condensation, which in turn can prevent rot within the loft space.

We make sure vents and eaves are not blocked by insulation. If the loft does not have sufficient ventilation, then that will be resolved as required under The Great British Grant Scheme.

Check every year or so for compression or dampness.

Initially, a full and thorough survey of the loft space is carried out, including a health and safety survey, to ascertain its suitability.

Any findings or concerns will then be discussed with you.

These could include, but are not limited to, damp, ceiling cracks, high amp cables, down-lighters, wasp nests, evidence of rodents, condensation, shallow lofts with less than 1 metre head height, etc.

The recommended depth of loft insulation is 270mm (11 inches).

Our experienced technicians will then ensure that there is sufficient ventilation within the loft space.

An average semi-detached house would be completed in less than 2 hours, the empty bags removed, and no mess to be seen.

All our technicians are fully insured.
